The Aro Tradition & Lineage

Ngak'chang Rinpoche and Khandro Déchen, the holders of the Aro tradition, have been the Root Teachers of Ngala Rig'dzin Dorje & Tsal'gyür Wangmo for twenty years. Everything that is taught and enacted at Aro Ga'dzong is the fruit of that relationship. Every year the Aro Ga'dzong teachers have a primary commitment to attend retreats with their own Lamas in the UK or USA.

This is a family lineage within the Nyingma Tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism, whose unusual characteristics make it singularly appropriate for many Westerners.

The Aro teachings and practices are principally concerned with transforming our experience of everyday being, rather than achieving an esoteric or spiritualised mode of existence. Our aim is to engender cheerful courage, perceptive consideration, sincere determination, natural gallantry, graciousness, creativity, and spaciousness.

The lineage emphasises: assimilation with everyday working life; appreciative sexual equality; the spiritual dimension of romantic relationship; artistic creativity; and the pursuit of life enhancing engagement with the Arts and challenging physical skill - such as equestrianism. Apprentices - students - practice within the context of their ordinary lives: marrying, raising families, and engaging in the activities of life which are common to the general population. Practitioners in the Aro tradition reside in Great Britain, North America, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Italy and Poland.
