Gompa, 'meditation place'
Aro Ga'dzong is a place of meditation and celebration, teaching and practice, arts and crafts, song and vision, physical yogas and dance, in the Nyingma Buddhist tradition.
It is the home of the married teachers Ngala Rig'dzin Dorje & Tsal'gyür Wangmo, who emigrated from London in May 2006 to found this centre. They had spent the previous year seeking a family home closer to their personal students in Europe, and suitable to host courses and events for them and the public.
The buildings were redeveloped in the 1970s and have now been comprehensively refitted and redecorated, the greater part by the hard work of the teachers and students. A meditation room (gompa) is being created in traditional style. Outdoors there are terraces suitable for teachings, classes, craftwork, performances of vajra dance, physical yogas and martial arts.
The house can accommodate thirty course participants, two or more to a room, with facilities for couples. Everyone can be seated in the gompa and in the dining room, and during the greater part of the year can eat outdoors. Children are welcome. There are solitary retreat facilities, and a self-contained guest apartment is available when not in use for courses.
